I've been looking forward to getting hold of this since I learned of it as a work in progress about a year ago and as soon as it dropped I finished it off in short order. Having waited 25 years for a Blood Drinker novel, there was no way it was going to see a bookshelf until the very last page had been turned. So grab a 'brew' and pull up a chair for another not so brief book review.

Death of Integrity is the latest in the Space Marine Battles series, a series I must confess to having not read anything from previously, something I will now have to rectify; it's also only my second foray into works by the author Guy Haley. The first being his short story The Rite of Holos which featured in Hammer & Bolter last year and is now available as an eBook. I covered 'Rite' very briefly in a post back then, a cracking little read of its own and also a prequel to DoI.

If you're a regular visitor to this Blog you'll know that the Blood Drinkers have been my chosen Chapter since I first got into 40k all those decades ago, you'll also be aware that I have written extensively about their existing cannon background and generated a huge amount of my own material to fill in the blanks as it were. This makes me a harsh critic indeed, you only need look at the roasting James Swallow's Blood Angels books endure at my hand and the Angels are only cousins to the Drinkers.

Suffice to say Guy had his work cut out, he'd shown real promise with the short story, now expectations were doubly high; would he, could he deliver?

The answer is a resounding yes and by the Battle Barge load although I did have to set a few personal feelings aside from the get go. It’s hard to read the novel you always dreamt you may someday write and see much of your own interpretation suddenly become irrelevant as the afore mentioned blanks are finally filled in by officially sanctioned work.

As usual I'll avoid spoilers in this review, trust me when I say there are some BIG twists that you will not see coming and foreknowledge will drastically reduce your enjoyment of this novel; but I will be revisiting the story in a later post to discuss it in depth due to the repercussions for my own Fandex.

Death of Integrity is a hefty slice of 'Grim Dark' action, delivered with aplomb by an author who is well versed in 40k lore (a quality some writers on Black Libraries payroll occasionally lack) and skilled in the broader Sci Fi genre; talents that have enabled Guy to produce an exciting story that is at once familiar and original.

The main thrust of the story is a Space Marine mission to cleanse a Space Hulk designated Death of Integrity of its Genestealer infestation; a tale that has its origins (as I have covered in a previous post here) in a small snippet from a ‘back in the day’ White Dwarf article, accompanied as things so often were during the magazines Golden Age, by a Mike McVey diorama. It’s later been reprinted and slightly expanded in both Forgeworld's Badab War book and the Death Watch RPG.

The mission was conducted by two of the original Rogue Trader Chapters, the Nova Marines and of course the Blood Drinkers. The novel is most definitely a two for one deal; Guy invests a lot of time in his portrayal of these two ‘supposedly’ Codex Chapters, revealing them both to be divergent from Guillimans treatise but in very different ways. The book alternates between the two forces, allowing contrasting views within the narrative and interweaving their own separate and compelling side stories.

I was really taken with these Astartes, they are not the bland cookie cutter Trans Human warriors that can often fill the pages of the more ‘bolter porn’ orientated books; but neither are they the shining enlightened exemplars of the Pre Heresy Legions.

They are the overstretched and isolated remnants of that once great brotherhood, altered beyond even their perception by the passage of time and their endless duty doggedly fighting humanities desperate fight for survival; steeped in ancient dogma and ritual, much of its origin and purpose long since lost or misinterpreted. They are suitably flawed heroes fit for the mouldering and archaic Imperium.

This in itself was enough to get the hooks into me, a long in the tooth gamer with a penchant for the ‘fluff’ of the hobby, I got very nostalgic reading the exceptional fleshing out of one of the iconic moments of my gaming past and what could be more iconic than a Space Hulk mission?

Guy does a great job of conjuring up all the elements that are the hallmarks of this popular theatre of combat from the 40k verse; dark, claustrophobic conditions and desperate close quarter fighting as the Marines do battle with their fearsome and intelligent Xenos foes.

He shows a real passion for ‘reality’ Sci Fi taking pains to ground an element of realism into the fantastical setting, I would best describe it as a ‘how would that actually work’ ethic. I found this to be very enjoyable and it served to strengthen my visualisation of the tale.

For example the Hulk itself; at first the familiar linear layout of cramped metal grilled tunnels from the board & video games springs to mind but how would one of these behemoths made up of the detritus of space actually fit together?

Guy’s answer, he crushes a nightmarish conglomeration of vessels and asteroids to create a chaotic, radiation choked environment where ceilings become floors; corridors turn into plunging shafts and vast caverns open up in the voids between. The Hulk itself now becomes difficult even dangerous terrain and a very real threat to the lumbering Terminators.

This attention to detail is continued in the wealth of lore woven into the story, adding to its richness and serving up extra delight for readers such as I who search out these little links to the established timeline and background.

Throw into this some Mechanicum interaction and of course those seismic twists I alluded to at the beginning of the post, surprises which had me flicking back a few pages because I just couldn't believe what I’d read and you've got an awesome addition to your hobby library.

Just so you don’t think this to be a completely one sided review of a gushing Blood Drinker fanboy (that conjures up some disturbing claret coloured images doesn't it) overwhelmed by the fact his Chapter have made it into print; there are a few issues that mar what is an otherwise excellent book.

First and most obvious is that the proofreading at Black Library quite often seems lackadaisical and is so in this case; misprints and grammatical errors (they must be obvious for me to spot them, a writer who relies heavily on spell check to ensure you can actually read my waffle) interrupt the flow of the story.

I counted two occasions where the Blood Drinkers are called Blood Angels! Come on (feigning a voice of exasperation) I've waited years for ‘my boys’ to get out from under their cousins shadow, had to explain to countless opponents that no they’re not up against the Blood Angels and certainly not the Soul Drinkers only to be mistakenly identified by a typo in their very own book.

Also, much as I have lauded Guy’s attention to detail, it may not be to everyone’s tastes as it can slow the pace some; not a problem for me I like getting sidetracked as you can tell but again I'm being thorough.

Finally there is a lot happening in this book, so much so that when the end comes it does feel a little hurried, a bit like a missed gear change with a lurch of acceleration. Again this isn't a fault so much as an over abundance of material, loose ends are still tied up where required and paths left open for possible future material.

Overall, this was an outstanding read, that I wholeheartedly recommend to you and I look forward to reading much more of Guy’s work within the 40k ‘verse.
Lagging even further behind the rest of my fellow Bloggers reporting the Games Day news, the Forge World seminar has been pretty comprehensively covered; but I hate not completing a mission and lets face it posts have been a rare thing on the 'Edge this year. So for what it's worth here is what I scribbled down during the very entertaining briefing by Tony Cottrell & Alan Bligh, along with some more pictures from the Battle of Phall diorama (The taking of the Contrador), oh and some miniature provisionally called Primarch Number 5, wonder who that could be?

The book will also have a section covering in lots of detail backgrounds of various historical Space Marine Battles entitled 'Selected Glories'.

It's slated 'if they get it back from the printers in time' for a pre Christmas release and should be current for at least a month before the ever prolific Forge World brings something else out.

Book 5 (3) ?

Some Q&A from the floor (or Tony Cottrell's on the board / not on the board game show)

These are not direct quotes, I couldn't scribble that fast, just a general idea of what was asked and answered.

Will FW be doing anything for Dark Eldar?

Aspiration to do a Dark Eldar book in the future (not on the board at present).

Will you be building a Warlord Titan?

Warlord Titan WILL be built.

Speaking to the exceptionally talented and all round nice guy Will Hayes in the main hall, he suggested he would like to do it, stating he has learnt a lot from designing the War Hound and then the Reaver, constantly refining and making the builds less complicated (reducing the number of individual parts) for the modeller, whilst retaining the detail and pose options.

We then got sidetracked with a very interesting discussion about Carcharodons (his own army), fluff in general and the art of subtlety when writing backgrounds to armies; which would merit a post all of it's own.

When will you be releasing a a miniature for Corax?

Corax is about 12 months out and will have his winged flight pack.

Will the rule system remain current throughout the Heresy series or will the books need updating as with the current Imperial Armour publications following 6th Ed?

Heresy is a long long way off completion, Calth is probably only 20% of the way into the conflict. They joked that there were probably 30 books in the series. So rules may evolve but they probably won't be going back to re-write them.

Will there be two miniatures for Alpharius and Omegon?

Alan quipped that they would just look like any other Marine and Tony had a marketing brainwave, they'll just make two tactical marines and charge us £50 for them.

Any plans for more Xenos races? Squats for example.

Squats are NOT on the board (except when Tony is on holiday then someone sneaks them on) they'll never get made unless of course Tony dies whilst away and nobody notices that they shouldn't be on there, then they will. (So Squat fans take out your contracts for a holiday hit now).

So in the vast desert of my Hobby time an Oasis appeared on the horizon (probably the first and only time Birmingham has been described as such) and I was able to bask in it's bounty of 40k goodness.

That's right, I'm pleased to report that yours truly managed to successfully navigate Spaghetti Junction to attend this years UK Games Day; enabling me to top up my rather frayed Hobby Karma and continue what has been a very popular series of posts from the event, every year since this Blogs creation back in 2010.

I apologise that this first report is a day late, my Cogitator decided to roll over and play dead when I attempted a late night upload of my picture haul from the day; thus I'm sure many of you will have already seen most of what's on offer here.

Hopefully though I got a couple of snaps worthy of adding to the deluge of images flooding the Blogosphere and bringing the day to life for those that couldn't attend.

The posts this year will be a little ragged round the edges and again my apologies, Time unlike the 'Stones' song, is not on my side.

First up a picture heavy post of upcoming releases and works in progress from the undisputed Lords of Games Day, Forge World.

As promised , I'm back (can't quite believe it took three months but that, it seems is parenthood for you) with a not so brief Books in Brief review of the Horus Heresy novel Fear to Tread by James Swallow.

In the past I have been, deservedly I think, quite harsh in my criticism of Swallow's handling of the Blood Angels in his 40k period books (here are links to my reviews for Blood Angels Omnibus and Red Fury). Perhaps I have an overly critical eye and fanboy bias due to the Chapter being the primogenitors of my own beloved Blood Drinkers; but the fact remains those books were by any stretch sub-par and the author can and has delivered much better.

It was with some consternation then that I found Swallow was still at the helm when it came to the first Heresy novel dedicated to the Primarch Sanguinius and his Legion.

So should fans of the Heresy series and the Blood Angels 'Fear to Tread' the pages of this novel?

Well with some reservation the answer is no but caution is still advised; Mr Swallow has pulled up his literary britches and while not delivering a classic, he has risen above his previous lamentable Blood Angel works, producing an adequate addition to the series.

The main thrust of the book follows the 9th Legions campaign into the Signus Cluster on the orders of the Warmaster Horus and is thus another offshoot from the main trunk of the Heresy and its slow growth towards the Siege of Terra. The momentous events on Signus Prime explain what the Blood Angels are busy doing whilst the rest of the Galaxy Burns; hint: they aren't just sitting round polishing the nipples on their power armour!

Signus is also the setting for the first of three pivotal moments in Legend of the Primarch of Sanguinius, the epic showdown depicted on the cover and what a cover! An awe inspiring piece that wouldn't look out of place on a Meatloaf Album and looks pretty goram impressive currently framed on the Forge wall (see pic); arguably Neil Roberts finest Heresy work to date.

Unfortunately the book doesn't quite live up to its glorious binding, it's faults knocking it out of the running for being anywhere near a series favourite. The pacing is off, the story lurching and detouring (although the flashbacks that illuminate Sanguinius's relationship with Horus are worth the trip) rather than steadily building to the awesome title fight. That fight being the duel between Sanguinius and Ka'Bandha which the author struggles to distil into words that which Roberts so brilliantly captured in his art.

The action for the most part is the standard 'Bolter Porn' fare with the usual cast of thousands dying explosive and ultimately forgettable deaths. It does have moments where the terrifying, reality warping power of Chaos is taken to new apocalyptic levels by the author, with some truly scene crunching events but these are fleeting and later descend into repetitive use of blood and bones (or no bones as the case may be).

Something I always enjoy with the Heresy novels, is when pieces of lore are woven into the fabric of the tale; little reveals or snippets of information that either draws together, adds to or expands the epic background of the 40k verse and has the veteran fanboy in me nodding contentedly. This book supplies a few; there is a major retcon of the origin of the Red Thirst that fits the story and works quiet well.

Another is the creation of an origin story for 'The Red Angel'; not to be confused with the title of the Primarch Angron (probably makes for awkward moments when they both attend the same Chaos cocktail parties). This 'Angel' was a curio feature in a double page drawing of Horus and his cronies in The Horus Heresy Collected Visions (a copy of which I fortunately own) and up until now, as far as I'm aware; nothing else was known about him.

Whilst on the subject of characters, this was perhaps the biggest weakness of the book; aside from the afore mentioned Red Angel and an audacious Captain of the 5th Company, the rest show little in the way of substance. I'd go so far as to say the Blood Angels could have stepped right off the page of one of Swallows 40k era stories and that (as you know by now) is not an endorsement. The Legion is lacking the bold unique flavour that has been lavished on others like The Thousand Son's or the Vlka Fenrika; aside from the addition of a Blood Angel specific Chaplain, these are cookie cutter Marines and a great opportunity to define the Sons of Sanguinius has been missed. There are also some odd character inclusions that I found to be extraneous to the plot, Wolves and Word Bearers seemingly just along for the ride.

The portrayal of Sanguinius is particularly frustrating, in a few places he rightly shines with angelic fury, although in one 'Leaf on the Wind' scene Swallow pushes the bounds of credibility beyond even a super human Primarch. The rest of the time Sanguinius comes across as a rather incompetent and gullible (despite his gift of foresight) leader prone to hissy fits of diva like proportions; this is not the Prince among Primarchs I was hoping for.

If that all sounds quite damning, it's not, this is a big improvement on what James Swallow has served up for the Blood Angels in the past and as I said at the start, being a Blood Drinker player I'm perhaps overly critical. I really struggled with this review because I so wanted to like this book more than the sum of its parts but for an honest assessment I had to remove the rose tinted helmet lenses.

He's no Abnett, Dembski-Bowden or McNeil, not every author can be; but as he has been given the reigns of my Chapters pre-history, that he's not in the same league as these greats is a shame. Still the story is competently told, holding enough interest and excitement to keep me turning the pages and its conclusion dovetails nicely with the ending of John French's excellent short story 'Crimson Fist' setting up more pieces for Unremembered Empire.Bixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09830846814651524209noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370929071374675339.post-2192760279116395182013-06-04T14:28:00.000+01:002013-06-04T14:28:42.507+01:00Postcards from the Edge

Time to check in with those of you still monitoring this channel for signs of life, letting you know that the Emperor's light still burns in my little corner of the Blogosphere albeit on minimal power setting.

My Hobby time has been on restricted duty since the birth of our daughter; compound that life changing event with a shift pattern that was custom designed to hinder the 40k hobbyist and a long term case of 'Slow Painter's Syndrome'. It all makes for poor reading I'm sorry to say.

Like many in our community (most will have read and some written similar posts) I'm still wrestling with the logistics of actually sitting back down at the painting table and getting a game in seems an insurmountable challenge at present; but I am determined to keep a firm grip on our beloved Hobby this time and not let it fall by the wayside as I did back in the middling years of Third Edition (a career enforced lapse that in the light of my current commitments appears quite trivial).

A couple of casualties early on in this battle were the Forgeworld Open Day, on account of being a latecomer to the news of it becoming a ticketed event; a bit frustrating (though I can appreciate why they made the change) as I did have the time to go and my regular attendance was something of a popular feature here on the blog. A weekend away to the Heresy Weekender was planned as both consolation & part of my 40th Birthday present, but sadly work played it's 'exigencies of duty' wargear card & I was again forced to watch from the sidelines.

To that end I have been lurking about the Blogosphere keeping up with current events as best I can whilst juggling baby and iPad, living the Hobby vicariously through the work of others.

Hobby Podcasting has been a boon to me as I battle the daily, rather less fun chores of parenting and I'm currently making great progress listening to the entire back catalogue of the excellent shows from The Independent Characters.

I've also been making the odd purchase or three despite tightening purse strings (I think it's a comfort thing), adding to the resin mountain on my work pending shelves.

To top it all, I received some welcome encouragement to get my creative writing head back on when I was contacted by a fellow blogger & hobbyist named Dan from afterimagedan.blogspot.co.uk asking to use some of my Draco Sector work in a global Battlefleet Gothic campaign he was planning.

I was more than happy to oblige, although I think his campaign will be well advanced before I can return to this rather neglected aspect of my Hobby time; check out his blog is you are BFG inclined.

So that's where yours truly stands at present, a proud father and a hopeful Hobbyist, if not a very productive one. I'll be attempting to drip feed some actual content back into the blog as soon as another break in the parenting schedule presents itself. Probably a Books in Brief review, as I have managed to get a couple more Heresy novels read, both Fear to Tread and Shadows of Treachery.

Until then, as always, I appreciate all of you dropping by; thanks, that is all.Bixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09830846814651524209noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370929071374675339.post-2252410591766136492013-03-01T01:32:00.000+00:002013-03-01T01:32:30.476+00:00My Greatest Creation : A Collaborative Effort

For all those wondering where in the Realms of Chaos yours truly has been for the past month (I note none of you sent search parties...) let me tell you that for once I have, what is known in my line of work as, 'a Lawful Excuse'.

I had been busying myself with the final preparations for a very important arrival up until yesterday morning and at 09:41 Hrs GMT, after bravely battling through much adversity and enduring all the Apothecaries could throw at her; the Good Lady Bix brought our VIP safely into the world.

A Baby Girl, late by 8 days (gets that from her Dad) and absolutely beautiful (most definitely her Mum) weighing in at a none too shabby 8 lbs 6 ounces; we have named our little ray of light Inara Jade.

So I may be offline for a tad longer, I sure as sure need to find where my last three nights sleep have run off to (I know, 'Get used to it!', I hear all the parents amongst the readership shout). But the Forge still stands, acting as a refuge to flee back to the Hobby when nappy changes threaten to damage my calm; so with luck I'll be back here on The Edge soon.

As always, thanks to all of you who take the time to drop by.Bixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09830846814651524209noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370929071374675339.post-80726654705472331922013-01-28T23:57:00.000+00:002013-01-29T00:32:36.035+00:00Skies of Blood : Stormraven Build Pt I

Some modelling progress at last, my two Stormraven kits have made it onto the Forge workbench; construction motivated by a recent big game played up at Warhammer World with my fellow gaming buds from our League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (a report and some pics may follow if I can bear reliving the pain of such a total arse whooping).

These Stormravens have been sat around in storage for a very long time now, mainly due to time constraints but also because I was deliberating whether to proceed with the standard GW construction or opt for a bit of cosmetic conversion work. After my initial stalwart defence of the ugly spuds less than flattering looks, see here, a few events had begun to chip away at my loyal resolve.

Firstly Chapter House Studios brought out their Tru-Scale Stormraven extension kit and then Forge World released the cracking looking Storm Eagle. Both kits addressing the main flaw of the original model i.e. there wouldn't really be enough room to swing a Gyrinx inside the stumpy little tub!

Well as you can see from these pictures, my resolve did indeed crumble and I bought two kits from Chapter House (as I already had the 'Ravens, getting the Storm Eagle wasn't cost effective, but don't rule out a purchase in the future, I've already pencilled in a slot on my Painting Chart).

I'd always been underwhelmed by the look of the products on the Chapter House site, but these kits got good reviews elsewhere and I was happy to find that I had not been wrongly informed. They required very little in the way of clean up/reshaping and they go together fairly easily with the GW parts. The online instructions aren't as clear as they could perhaps be; but taking a little extra time to play around with a dry fit will see you right.

Never liked the clunky looking servitor slaved turret gun
so on goes a hatch instead and the guns get mounted on the hull.

The extended hull section really beefs up and rights the wrongs of the original kit but has a side effect of making the tail section look a bit clunky and redundant in my opinion. So following a hefty dose of inspiration from a excellent conversion by #2501 featured on his Blog Musings of a Metal Mind, I played around with the configuration, settling on this much sleeker and meaner looking beast.

Forge World Rhino doors fit well and really add to the model, just remember to ensure
the Hurricane Bolters have stopped firing before exiting the vehicle!

I'm very happy with how it's going so far, this first 'Raven, the 'Heart of Darkness', is pretty much ready for painting up in Death Company livery. The second, 'Thunder Child' is well on the way to build completion with only one minor hiccup along the way; in my rush to get it assembled enough to use for the game I glued the top engine cowling's onto the wrong engines, only realising my mistake when it came to fitting the wings and therefore too late to rectify without the risk of incurring significant damage.

Now it's got a top hatch, why not a boarding grapple? Also useful for
rescuing reckless youths who come a cropper whilst doing a bit of DIY on cloud city aerial arrays.

I've managed to tweak it enough that it fits together fairly well, with only very minor disruption to the level of the wings, most people won't even notice, but you know how it is when you're aware of a flaw, it glares at you accusingly; I'm hoping a good paint job will appease the Thunder Child's offended Machine Spirit as it sure as hell showed it's displeasure during our game!Bixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09830846814651524209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370929071374675339.post-81198573529886886582013-01-20T00:48:00.000+00:002013-01-20T17:24:32.836+00:00War Paint : Blood Drinker Priest Markings

Staying on the subject of Guy Haley's writing for the moment, I mentioned in Decembers post that the author had described a prominent marking on the Sanguinary High Priest character in his Hammer and Bolter short story, The Rite of Holos and that he was then kind enough to share his ideas about the marking with me.

It was described as a black cross painted over Brother Teale's face; Guy stated that this was specific to the Sanguinary High Priest alone and that other Priests might have similar markings to denote their rank within the order. He was of a mind that the Blood Drinkers would adorn themselves with paint in contrast to the Nova Marines who are heavily into ritual tattooing.

With this in mind, I've had a bit of a play around on Paint, nothing fancy (it's me, the Techno-Barbarian after all) and come up with some rough sketched ideas that I hope to transfer to my Sanguinary Priest miniatures.

High Priest

Guy's use of ceremonial face painting by the Chapter's Priests was easy to mesh with my Fandex as I had written a tribal background for the Children of the San, the peoples I envisioned as inhabiting San Guisuga, the Death World home of the Blood Drinkers.

As a recap, in my vision of San Guisuga, the mysterious habitable enclave of the planet resembles the various terrains found on the continent of South America, the tribes of the San are loosely based on the pre-Columbian peoples of that continent; albeit much more racially diverse, with both people and environment given a suitably large dunk in the Sci Fi bath.

Priest

Therefore as the Chapter embraced the blood rituals of their founding planet, so too would they adopt the face and body painting practices of the San tribes.

Even the colour black was conducive with my sources of inspiration, the South American Indians often using charcoal or Huito juice to paint themselves black.

That the symbol Guy chose was a cross, is something I have also given a bit of thought to, aside from the fact that it could be a knowing wink to the 'Space Vampire' status of all the Son's of Sanguinius, subtly mocking the convention of Vampiric aversion to the Crucifix.

Perhaps it could be an echo of the religious icons of some of the original Terran refugees stranded on San Guisuga, it's specific meaning now lost to time, but the race memory of it being a mark of some spiritual potency remains.

Novitiate

Anyhow these are what I came up with, like I said fairly rough and I'm still undecided whether to use a straight bar across the eyes as in the Novitiate or follow the contours of the eye ridges a bit more as in the other two pictures. Maybe getting it down on a miniature will make my mind up, thoughts?

It would appear that my post back in early December featuring the cover for the upcoming Space Marines Battles book The Death of Integrity may have been a little hasty.

The author Guy Haley has posted some new art for the book over on his Blog, he explains that what he thought was the cover was in fact just a place holder.

From the looks of it Jon Sullivan was just warming up, check out the full picture below.

Death Company Terminator FTW! Ok, it wasn't much of a stretch to figure out why Chapter Master Caedis might be wearing black; but still...how cool is that? It's just crying out for an entry in the Fandex.

I doubt we'll see any official rules, but if anyone from the White Dwarf team should pass this way, I'll be sure to mention that Chapter Approved was a great magazine feature, that the current publication could only benefit from it's reinstatement and that Death Company clad in Tactical Dreadnought Armour would be a good place to start.

Going back to the picture, I'm really pleased to see the Genestealers in their classic colour scheme and that sword is truly epic. According to Guy, the weapon emits holograms of past victories around the blade, which is just an awesome idea, bragging rights 40k style!

Well due to the vagaries of the Warp (read, Bix forgot to hit the scheduling button in his hurry to wrap presents and get the tree up in time), my festive post seems to have arrived a little after the event; but as the clock hasn't struck midnight on this year just yet (least not here in land land of Zulu Time) the festive season is still in play.

So with a quick edit I hope you all had a grand Candlemass and that the jolly fat bloke with a penchant for 'Go Faster Red' brought you a hefty haul of all you wished for. I'm currently sitting pretty with the Imperial Infantryman's Handbook (an updated and combined book of the Munitorum Manual and the Uplifting Primer), Dan Abnett's 'Pariah' and a fist full of GW vouchers which I'm sure I can burn through in next to no time.

Looking back on the year it has been both momentous and disappointing, we celebrated 25 years of 40k and some of us realised just how old that meant we were!

The arrival of 6th edition brought about the usual upheaval and schisms in the Hobby, but was a change for the better in my books, despite the Blood Angel codex losing some of it's edge.

White Dwarf got a very long overdue makeover, which again for the most part, seems to have been a very positive move.

Then Forge World turned it up to eleven with The Horus Heresy; the floodgates of 30k goodness opened and our wallets quickly ran dry.

To top it all, my beloved Blood Drinkers got some official Black Library page time all of their own.

The only disappointment I mention is that I haven't had the time to make the most of this bumper filled year; I know it's probably the most repeated grumble of any Hobby Blog , I'll not dwell on it and I won't make promises that the next year will see any steadier a posting schedule, as my beautiful Wife is currently doing a amazing job forging our first child.

With her precious little cargo due to arrive in just over a month I'll be doing a lot of assembly and painting of another kind as I work frantically to prepare the nursery.

But fear not, the Forge still stands and time will be found for the Hobby, as a wise Admiral once advised me "Never pass up a chance to play because you're 'too busy'." Sage words that can and will be applied to both Hobby and Child.

So I wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Prospero...sorry Prosperous New Year, as always doubly so those who, through duty or circumstance can't be with your loved ones; be safe and may you get home soon.

Thanks for reading, that is all.Bixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09830846814651524209noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370929071374675339.post-87368867634362448262012-12-07T13:55:00.001+00:002012-12-07T13:55:45.800+00:00Cover Art : The Death of Integrity

As mentioned in last months post 'Written in Blood', the author Guy Haley has penned a Black Library novel (now confirmed as part of the Space Marine Battles series) featuring the Blood Drinkers and Nova Marines Chapters as they fight to cleanse a Genestealer infested Space Hulk 'The Death of Integrity'.

Guy has today posted up the cover for the forthcoming book (due out September 2013, where's that DeLorean when you need it?) on his Blog Haley's Comment and he kindly gave permission for me to repost it here on The Veil's Edge.

Now that's a sword! Could it be the 'Scyphus Vitae'? Makes me want to shout 'Let me show you my Stealer spine!' (Ninjabread fans will know of what I speak).

The art is by the brilliant Jon Sullivan, it's suitably 'Grim Dark' and brutal; but you may note that the Terminator wielding afore mentioned fancy Choppa, isn't wearing red armour. Guy has confirmed that this is Chapter Master Caedis of the Blood Drinkers and there is a not so straightforward reason for him being painted black (cue music).

What could the Lord of San Guisuga's deviation from the hallowed Codex mean?

Whilst I ponder that question for the next (groan) eight months, Guy has been very helpful in sharing with me his ideas in relation to some specific markings on the face of the Sanguinary High Priest, described in his short story 'The Rite of Holos' see Hammer and Bolter issue 24.

I'll hopefully be working on including these both into the Fandex (along with any other changes his work inspires) and getting them painted up on my miniatures in the not too distant future.Bixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09830846814651524209noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370929071374675339.post-15069715065741831702012-11-30T19:18:00.000+00:002012-11-30T19:18:12.877+00:00New Life into Old Lead Pt III

As part of my current Death Company project, I had another opportunity to conduct a renovation on one of the old painted miniatures in my collection. A chance to right the wrongs as it were, of a heretical (as far as the Codex Astartes is concerned) colour scheme, with the added benefit of a few years improvement in my painting skills; how much improvement is debatable!

This is Chaplain Samael 'Mortifier of the Evocati' my counts as Lemartes, as you can see he was decidedly white; a good contrast, I thought at the time, with the black armour of the Death Company he would lead. What was I thinking?

Still I love the miniature and there was no way I was going to retire him due to some dodgy paint job . He's an early 90's Blood Angel Death Company Chaplain with a minor conversion to his Crozius, inspired by one I saw in a Howling Griffons army painted by Fred Reed and featured in White Dwarf, again many years ago; I still have the page somewhere.

So with a little reverence and a 'sorry old chap, it's for the best', he was dunked in a bath of green detergent, left for a few days, then the gunk cleaned off with a thorough scrub using a toothbrush. Primed and base coated black, I then set about bringing him in line with the rest of my Blood Drinkers Death Company who, as the Codex dictates, follow the scheme as set down by the Blood Angels.

I've gone for a much simpler effect on my power weapons, the lightning effects were just causing me too many botched attempts and thus slowing down my already plodding painting progress, I've gone back and painted the others on my completed miniatures for uniformity.

Once again I'm very happy with the final outcome, he's much improved in my humble opinion and now fits in perfectly with my ongoing efforts for a Codex adherent army. The addition of the skull from the old plastic skeletons set added a little extra character to the base and you can't have too many skulls now can you? Just ask GW.

As regular readers of this Blog will be well aware, I'm a huge fan of 40k lore; the ever expanding stories and history that makes up the Hobbies setting being as, if not more important to me than the game itself.

One of my consuming passions is the constant hunt for canon material relating to my chosen Space Marine Chapter, The Blood Drinkers; they've been with me since the start of my 40k journey some 25 years ago and as such have defined much of my Hobby experience.

Now I've oft bemoaned the fact that they, one of the original Rogue Trader Chapters, have had very little attention paid to them over the years; overshadowed by their more popular Blood Angel cousins, the small stream of material featuring them slowly trickled almost to nothing.

With hindsight that complaint was misjudged, as the dearth of material proved something of a boon to the aspiring writer in me (however delusional those aspirations may be) and spurred me to create a background for the Chapter, interlaced with the cannon material I'd collected, as featured in my Blood Drinkers Fandex section of the Blog.

Where is all this leading? Well it seems as if my loyal...ok fanatical faith, has been rewarded on some positive Karmic level and that the 'Drinkers are starting to make a modest comeback within the pages of officially sanctioned 40k material; above and beyond their usual Codex Blood Angels nod.

Perhaps my fervent ramblings about the Chapter, cast upon the tides of the web, saw some small fraction of inspiration wash up in the right place; the resurgence does appear to have started in earnest about two years ago, back when this Blog was born. More likely one of the lesser cosmic coincidences, but it's a nice thought.

It began at Forge World, with an entry in their excellent Imperial Armour series IA9 : The Badab War Pt I (they did also have a picture of a Razorback in the Chapters livery way back in IA2 but nothing more).

The Nova Marines section of the book featured details of an action undertaken by their Chapter along with the Blood Drinkers; the cleansing of a Genestealer infested Space Hulk 'The Death of Integrity'.The entry expanded upon a small section featured in an ancient White Dwarf article on Genestealers, written by Paul Murphy, later reprinted in the 1991 Warhammer 40,000 Compilation (showing my age again).
Following on from this in 2011 Fantasy Flight Games published Rites of Battle for their Death Watch RPG series, within was a whole page detailing both the Blood Drinkers involvement in the Jericho Reach campaign setting and advice for playing a Battle Brother from the Chapter attached to the Death Watch.

FFG continued in 2012 with Honour the Chapter , including mention of the Death of Integrity mission and creating a relic blade specifically for the Chapter, the 'Scyphus Vitae' (which I will be looking to adapt to 40k for my army at some stage).

September this year, Hammer and Bolter Issue 24 carried a short story by a new (as far as I'm aware) Black Library author Guy Haley; 'The Rite of Holos' follows a contingent of Blood Drinkers, including some very senior officers, as they come to the aid of an Imperial world beset by a Genestealer Cult. It's a cracking little read, although necessarily brief due to it's format and I was heartened to see that the authors take on the Chapter was similar to mine.

Having located the authors Blog at guyhaley.wordpress.com I was about to contact him and pester him with fanboy like questions such as the timeline period his tale was set in, so I could update my Fandex as I try to do with all related canon, ensuring that the events and characters don't clash. I had an inkling of when it was set and what it related to but I also wanted to know whether he had plans or been requested to write more about the Chapter.

As luck would have it the Blog had just been updated confirming my thoughts that story was a teaser, part of something bigger and since then Guy Haley has announced that he will be writing 'The Death of Integrity' (keep ending up back on that Hulk don't we); whispers on the net have it as being part of the Space Marine Battles series, although no announcements from BL yet.

So I await that book with eager anticipation and look forward to reviewing it in a Books in Brief post upon it's release; judging by the short story, Guy will do the Blood Drinkers justice, hopefully bringing this great Chapter to the attention of a wider audience and continuing their revival.
The cursed Daemons of Workload have been casting their damnable binding rituals again and the other week my Astropathic Choir suffered a very messy Fatal Exception Error which shut off all communications with the rest of the Verse (my modem decided to die).

However, I've now received a new shipment of Astropaths from Holy Terra and with some much needed leave on the horizon, I should hopefully be back to Hobby activity presently and the accompanying waffle I send out into the void should soon follow.

Ok well it's a week late, after all the excitement of Games Day and the follow up posts I needed a little break; but seeing as I missed marking the first year milestone completely I thought it would be remiss if I didn't make the effort to mention this one.

Two years on and this little blog of mine has grown considerably, in fact last month recorded the highest number of visits to date, clocking in at just over 10k! That is very humbling, my thanks go out to all those that take the time to follow this rather sporadic journal of my Hobby adventures and to those who just happen by to read the odd post.

Your comments are always appreciated and the knowledge that at least some of my musings are of interest to others is quite heart warming; seeing hits register from all over the globe never ceases to be a source of wonderment, bringing a smile to my face.

As a Birthday present to myself (for all my *cough* hard work) I bought the first Forge World Heresy book 'Betrayal' at Games Day; special mention of thanks to my buddy Will for making like a Caestus Assault Ram and bagging me a copy while I was still queuing in the entrance hall frantically texting him targeting coordinates.

I also got it signed by none other than the big man himself Alan Bligh; the book is a tome of collectable awesomeness and I will try and get a review up on it at some point.

Finally, I played my first two games of 6th Edition on Saturday (which is cause for celebration in itself) and work permitting, the next post will cover my initial thoughts and experiences with the new rules.

So all that remains is to wish The Veil's Edge a very happy second Birthday, blow out the candles and go stuff myself with some cake; thanks again for reading and here's to another year of Hobby Blogging.Bixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09830846814651524209noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370929071374675339.post-88143227812054254252012-09-29T12:33:00.001+01:002012-09-30T00:31:58.657+01:00UK Games Day 2012 : Pt V Final Thoughts

So as the afterglow of Games Day fades over the horizon of the passing week, one last post with my final thoughts on the event, accompanied by some photos of Forge Worlds grand Horus Heresy diorama.

In this the 'Second Age' of my Hobby saga, it was my fourth Games Day and if you care to delve into the archives of this blog you'll read that I've had both good and bad experiences at past events.

I've never felt Games Day quite lives up to expectations, which perhaps it never can; we're a demanding lot us Hobbyists, with an insatiable appetite for new experience, be it new miniatures, stories, rules etc. You can only do so much in a day I suppose.

On an organisational level GW have appeared in the past to be indifferent to obvious problems or at least very slow in addressing them; in particular the retail side of the event and the curse of queues longer than Soviet era bread lines. This has always surprised me as Games Day is a sure fire way to generate extra revenue, having thousands of Hobbyists, their appetite stoked, let loose in a proverbial 'sweet shop'; you would have thought that GW would want to optimise this to get the maximum amount of customers through the tills.

This year, the positive wind of change that we've already seen blowing through the offices of White Dwarf would seem to have lifted the organisers of Games Day along with it.

The biggest change and to my mind the greatest improvement was to the retail planning; giving over a whole Battle Barge hanger worth of space to the combined stands of GW, Forge World and The Black Library, allowed them to expand the sales areas, which were subsequently well staffed cutting down on wait times hugely.

Baskets were handed out, to assist in the gathering of goods, queue lanes were ordered with metal barriers and they had set up an Aegis Defence Line of tills to process the purchases as you came away from the area weighed down with mountains of loot.

I visited the sales area twice that day and both times, breezed through with the minimum of fuss despite my rapidly emptying wallet sobbing for mercy in my back pocket. Even the staff seemed much more at ease, no hordes of disgruntled Hobbyists waving pitchforks and flaming brands baying for their blood this year.

The rest of the event felt similarly well ordered, with a fairly logical layout, appropriate amounts of space given to display stands (if Forge World keep expanding at the rate they are, they'll need a Games Day sized event of their own) and a good variety of things to see and do.

As always, all the staff from the various studios and teams were friendly, approachable and forthcoming with advice and information (well as much as the security strictures of the Ordo Workshop would allow). Having managed to attended a seminar for the first time, I think it's something that will remain on my objectives list for future years.

The IT stand was particularly good, although at first I thought it was an Apple store! ;o) With tablets and phones on hand to allow try outs of the digital Codex and the Psychic Deck App. I was surprised at how much I liked the afore mentioned App and I'll maybe cover it in more detail in another post.

Overall I had a really great time this year, the whole event had a much more chilled and mature vibe and by that I don't mean to deride the playful nature of our Hobby or it's appeal to Kids, after all, that's where most of us began our love of the Hobby and we are most if not all just children grown old; but I think even Kids can enjoy a Games Day without having to shout WAAAGH every few seconds.

There was fun and professionalism in just about the right equal measures and if GW can continue to build on this success, I for one will remain a happy and hungry Hobbyist.Bixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09830846814651524209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370929071374675339.post-73740152672490220082012-09-26T00:30:00.000+01:002012-09-26T00:30:01.903+01:00UK Games Day 2012 : Pt IV Golden Demon

Continuing my coverage of UK Games Day, here are some photos I took of the Golden Demon painting competition entries. These are the ones that most caught my eye for one reason or another; but whilst there was talent on display well beyond my meagre skills as a painter, I did feel that the overall volume of quality was down on last year. (Pic Heavy)

Not really sure why this would be, perhaps my visits to the cabinets coincided with judging rounds and I missed a whole bunch, or more controversially something I discussed with some of 'The Gents'; are the small elite group of professional painters whose amazing works tour competitions around the globe, winning large hauls of awards, dissuading the more humble Hobby painter from entering?
This diorama had a real cinematic feel, I could imagine the dust swirling around, the whine of the Valkyrie engines and the shouts of the Elysians as they deploy to secure the landing zone; meanwhile the Imperial Fist stands vigil for a moment before the remains of the fallen are recovered.
Last but by no means least, two of 'The Gents' entered the competition; Paul who, as regular readers of this Blog will know, is no stranger to Golden Demon, having won more than a few trophies in the past and Will trying his hand for the first time.

Paul entered two 40k categories, first up Duel, which was a reworking of a piece he had entered back in 2010.
Just a rough and ready post tonight as I'm on my chin straps following a very long but fruitful excursion to this years Games Day and what a great day it was. I'm very glad to report that the GW renaissance continues, they once again appear to have listened and taken note, the whole event was a big improvement.

But more of that in another post, my buddy Will and I took a whole ton of Pics which I plan to start posting tomorrow once they've gone through the quality control of slightly less tired eyes; for today I bring you news from the Forge World Seminar that we attended, hosted by Tony Cotrell & Alan Bligh.

These are the notes I took and a few, rather poor photos using my phone of some of the slides shown during the seminar; fear not though, as most of what was shown here was also in the Design Team Cabinets and they'll be the in the next post (the product of a better camera).

Dominating proceedings was of course the Heresy...(yes, yes I'll be getting to that bit in a minute), but Tony and Alan were both at pains to point out that development and production of 40k related products will not be put on a back burner as it were and that the design team had been and is continuing to expand to better work on both eras of the game.

To back this assertion, there were two Imperial Armour Books announced, the first being the 2nd Edition of IA Volume One (Imperial Guard) featuring all the current FW Imperial Guard vehicles with updated rules for 6th Edition.

The second was IA Volume Twelve 'The Fall of Orpheus', which details the invasion of an entire Sector by Necron Forces and judging by some of the miniatures on display they will be brining some new hardware to the fight; they also among other things decide to put out a Sun! Other forces featuring in the book will be the Minotaurs Chapter and the Death Korps of Krieg.

Necron Sentry Pylon

There will be a lot more scenery (boards etc...) in Hollow Cast being produced which will be themed and released alongside the campaign books; I think that falls to Blake Spence and I did see a rough work in progress which had the look of some kind of Necron instillation.

The figure for Bran Redmaw that we saw at GD 2011 didn't quite cut the mustard and has been knocked back and will remain in development hell (my words) for the foreseeable.

There will be a Warlord Titan, but I'll cover that in the Heresy section, speaking of which...

The Heresy!

Volume Two is titled 'Massacre' and will cover part one of the Isstvan V campaign (FW are in this for the long haul guys n gals) It will feature forces of the Adeptus Mechanicus, Iron Hands, Salamanders, Word Bearers and the Night Lords.

Later books will cover the war on Mars and Calth, but will not be tied to order and progression of the Black Library novels.

The next main character miniatures will be Loken and Abaddon (by Simon Egan?); the WIP appearing as a dual between the two and only Abaddon was finished

There will be many more characters as the Heresy progresses, obviously all the Primarchs and of course The Emperor (oh happy joy), also some characters not featured in the Black Library books, specific to the FW campaign books to add a different perspective.

There may be some scope for event only collectables of (so far) non combat characters, Malcador for example.

Primarchs who become Daemons and change noticeably as the Heresy progresses will also get new figure.

Sons of Horus Justaerin Terminators

Sons of Horus Justaerin Terminators.

Sisters of Silence and Custodes will be produced but are not likely until FW covers the attack on Prospero.

Legion specific Contemptor Dreds.

Robots will be coming, for Mechanicus and some Legions.

Knights may well make a return although probably not in Vol Two.

Possibility of new Titan variants for the Heresy as way back in the day when Titans were first thought up, it was always envisioned that there were a multitude of variants operated by the Imperium. However FW need to make a Warlord before they start on new types.

No plans for a Stormbird and current thinking among FW and BL teams is that there is no definitive design for one, rather it is a broad class of Space Marine transport craft.

The Thallax

Finally there was a fragment of a sneak peek at a new Mechanicus warrior, named the 'Thallax' it was just a torso alongside a Marine for scale, described as a brain and spinal cord encased in a type of battle suit a bit like a Drednought but about the size of a Terminator or Ogryn.

So that's it for now, a very interesting seminar thanks to Mr Bligh, Mr Cotrell and the promise of great things to come. A fairly brief postcard tonight, well for a guy that waffles like a Protocol Droid; again it's been a while and I wanted to get a few updates in before hitting the sack for an early trek to Games Day tomorrow.

There is so much going on in the Hobby at the moment I've a real feeling we are entering a grand new era, the sort of momentous shake up that happened when the Emperor said to his mates 'Lads I'm bored, lets go on a Crusade!'

The new White Dwarf landed on my door mat this morning with enough force to shell shock the cat and leave a large ordinance size crater in the carpet; the Pound increase in price tag seems to have been mirrored in weight gain!

This is a hefty slab of Games Workshop / Forge World goodness and I'm very impressed, no time for an in depth review due to earning last minute credits with the Good Lady prior to tomorrows field trip, but there are plenty around already, such as Tale of Painters where Stahly has written a very detailed breakdown and critique of the reborn monthly.

Briefly, it's a massive improvement in pretty much all areas (although I question the merit of red backgrounds for miniature photography, too dark), very smartly presented it would grace any stratagem table with it's professional look and quality feel; gone is the 'in your face' GW product catalogue. What's left is a more mature publication which looks far more geared towards promoting the Hobby; oh and it's got a FREE poster in it and is chock full of the Chaos / Heresy new releases, including some concept art by the always awesome Jes Goodwin...Sold?

Black Library have announced Heresy Collectors Editions, I haven't seen a price tag yet but the concept sounds interesting, I was only recently looking at my dog eared and well thumbed Heresy paperbacks, pondering whether it would be worthwhile collecting a new and unread set.

One bit of sour news, I missed out on the limited edition boxed set of Dark Vengeance; after all that time wasted sitting on the Aegis Defence Line only to give in and order it (see here for the full tale of my deliberations) it turns out Total Wargamer didn't get the amount of allocations they were apparently expecting from GW (they tell me this happened to all independents).

But every cloud...I decided to get the soft back rule book on it's own and picked it up on eBay for a fairly reasonable price; whilst I was there, I stumbled across a mint, still sealed copy of the 2009 Space Hulk.

As I was just getting back into the Hobby when this came out, I quite foolishly missed the opportunity to buy it and it's price, as most will know, has been climbing ever since. I can't say I got it for a bargain, I pretty much paid the going rate; but the money I'd had back from my failed purchase of Dark Vengeance took some of the impact of buyers guilt.

I'm looking forward to playing something a little different and painting up the Terminators for my 'Drinkers army...'Let me show you my Stealer spine!'

Ok I said brief and instead I've gone on like Tolstoy, time to head for my Pit; see you after Games Day for my coverage of the event, my wallet walking out on me and perhaps some cake as The Veil's Edge will be two years young.

Thanks, that is all.Bixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09830846814651524209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370929071374675339.post-30481982714765521932012-09-18T18:57:00.000+01:002012-09-18T18:57:32.719+01:00Breaking Net : The Heresy, Chaos & More!

I hadn't planned to post any more pre-release product news for a while, there are sites that do it far better, having lots of sources, getting news fast and posting much more frequently than mine.

Also I never intended this kind of post to be much of a focus for the Blog, unless of course it was something I was buying; but with such a deluge of awesomeness coming from Games Workshop and Forge World right now I just couldn't resist the alteration to the planned schedule.

Besides I reasoned that being so far out on the fringe of the Imperium's Blogosphere, some regular visitors to The Veil's Edge may not pass by some of the more congested trade lanes to pick up the news. Not you Danny, I know you consort with all manner of Blogs be they sanctioned or not, you Rogue Trader! ;o)

So without further preamble, we break Net to take you live to a host of shininess.
White Dwarf Reboot

I for one have been bemoaning the state of White Dwarf for many years, but also giving the thumbs up to small steps that have been sporadically made over the past while, showing promise of a change of direction.

Now they have their own building, a new team and (if rumour is to be believed) a new ethos brought about by a lot of research into what we the customers want. Of course all this remains to be seen, the proof of the magazine will be in the reading as it were; but I like the cover. The new toned down title and smarter feature spacing, allows the cover art to be better appreciated and has an echo of the very early editions of WD; as for the inside...

Chaos Reigns

With miniatures like this, it's going to be increasingly difficult to resist the lure of Chaos; but resist I shall and when we meet in battle, I will pause only briefly to wonder at their sinister magnificence before blasting them back into the Warp with the Emperors righteous fury!

You can see more of these leaked pics from where I sourced them as usual, over on Natfka's Faeit 212 Blog.
Following the announcement that Forge World would be embarking on a Heresy product line, it has become clear they've been planning and marshalling their forces for quite some time; in the lead up to Games Day UK the pre-release info for the 30k Verse is coming like a Legion strength Drop Pod Assault.

Including what I think is a Fellblade, which looks like an old Predator Tank on serious steroids and a particular favourite of mine, a real blast from the past; is a Marine Communications Specialist.
Here are some work in progress pics of yesterdays completed Death Company Dreadnought Abraxas for those that may be interested.

I know I got these posts arse about face, but I just couldn't resist putting up the completed work first as it's such a rarity. Also I still don't take enough pictures when I'm working on a project to show detailed progression (takes me long enough to paint something without all the breaks for a photo shoot)!

But I did take a few of the little bit of conversion work I did on the banner which may be of use to some.

The Dreadnought started life as standard Furioso from the current plastic kit, I picked it up from a work colleagues son who had sadly decided to leave the hobby after the gaming group at his school folded. The model had already been built but unfortunately the lad had used Polystyrene Cement rather messily in its construction.

This caused me quite a few clean up issues and as I wanted to switch out the front of the Sarcophagus with the one for the Death Company; I had to hack it away and do some filling with Liquid Green Stuff, which worked quite nicely for filling in small gaps.

The banner is from the Forge World Black Templars Venerable Dreadnought set; I bought the Dreadnought a few years back during one of my lapses of reason and soon decided that despite it being a great model, it didn't really fit the look of my 'Drinkers army.

The banner however was just the thing to add the finishing touch to Abraxas and help him stand out on the table top.

I'm sure most of you are well aware of the need to prep resin prior to painting by cleaning off the release agent in soapy water with a bit of a light scrub with a brush. The banner had quite a liberal coating of the paint repelling agent and due to it's relative fragility I was unable to apply enough pressure to clean it well enough.

After a bit of pondering I tried giving the whole thing a light coat of matt varnish and it worked a treat, with the base coat adhering well to the surface.

I carefully cut away the small shields and crosses from the oath papers with a modelling blade and also sanded down the Templar insignia on the shield using my Dremel, which is such a handy and versatile tool for model making.

Again not wanting to teach anyone to suck eggs, but be sure to wear some form of dust mask when filing or sanding resin and safely clean up your work area after, this stuff is bad for your lungs!

I then balled some very small pieces of Green Stuff and applied them at the top of the oath papers, pressing them into place with the tip of another Dremel tool which had just the right circumference to form the indentation of a purity seal.

For extra strength I then drilled and pinned the banner pole (using brass rod) to the top of the Dreadnought.

The Chalice is a Green Stuff press mould from the Forge World Blood Angel Icon Pack , I cut the wing and blood drop away, repositioning the blood drop to form the Blood Drinkers insignia. It's a little rough around the edges, but for a first attempt at press moulds, I'm fairly happy with it.
